Beetroot Can Enhance Endurance Performance

Runners and cyclists often supplement beetroot juice into their diets.

It's not just a fad though, as there is scientific evidence of its ergogenic properties due to the nitrate contained in beetroot.

- Nitrate has been proven to improve aerobic endurance performance.
- Nitrate supplementation, such as beetroot juice, increases plasma (blood) nitrate levels which reduces the oxygen consumption during exercise (you become more energy efficient).
- Increased nitrate levels also reduces the ATP (energy) cost of muscle force production. This again makes aerobic exercise more efficient and less energy demanding.
